How durable is such a house?

Structural strengththe wooden frame is rigorously designed to support the the ceiling, roof or the upper floor load. At the same time, the high degree of straw compression at a density of 100 kg / sq m contributes to the structural strength. Last but not least, in the event of an earthquake, the walls of such a house are flexible and elastic, allowing the movement of the structure without the risk of collapse.

Fire resistance: straw bales houses have a high fire resistance. Laboratory tests have shown that a straw bale wall plastered resist fire for more than two hoursThis is not surprising: due to the high degree of straw compression, there is no oxygen within the balls to facilitate combustion. In addition, the MgO boards used for finishes have superior fire resistance and are classified in the reaction class A1.

Durability: careful selection of natural materials, testing them before purchasing and rigorous design ensure the reliability of our building system. We have taken into account all the weather phenomena types that may occur in Romania and we have solutions for each of them, both in terms of design and ecological materials. Therefore, a Prefabio house is at least as durable as a classical construction.


The straw has a negative carbon footprint. Compared with conventional thermal insulation materials, straw production does not require industrial processing and generates very low energy consumption. At the same time, the straw contains about 50% carbon, which means that a 150-200 sqm building, where are used between 6 and 8 tons of straw, will take out the atmosphere and store up to 4 tons of carbon. Moreover, straw is an agricultural waste available locally, is renewable and biodegradable.

Energy efficiency

Due to low thermal conductivity of straw bales, prefabricated walls offer a higher level  of thermal insulation. Therefore, houses built with the Prefabio system require a low energy consumption for heating/cooling, being both ecological and economicalA straw bales house has an energy consumption up to 75% smaller than a conventional building. This percentage can be reduced further by following the design principles for passive houses (taking into account the region’s climate data, the thermal conductivity of materials, mechanical ventilation for heat recovery,etc.). According to the standard imposed by the Passive House Institute in Darmstadt, Germany, such a house has an energy consumption of 15 kWh / sq m per year. By comparison, an A class energy building in Romania consumes up to 125 kW / sq m per year. Considering that a passive house requires a rigorous thermal insulation system, the Prefabio system is ideal for building such a construction.

Non-toxic materials

Without volatile organic compounds (VOCs): unlike most conventional materials used for finishes, containing and emitting chemicals that can affect your health, Prefabio building system uses only natural materials with no harmful effect.

Optimal vapor diffusion

The Prefabio house interior environment  is very healthy due to materials used for plastering and finishing, making the walls permeable. Because the walls “breathe”, you will no longer have problems with mold and dampness and also reduce the risk of allergies.

Remarkable soundproofing

Due to the thickness and wall structure, any external noise will not bother you, allowing you to enjoy more silence than in a conventional house.

Easy assembly

The modular prefabricated walls are made in our production facility and then delivered and assembled in the shortest time. The walls for a 100 sq m house can be produced in a month and assembled on site in a few days. Moreover, having no meteorological constraints as a regular building site, we can produce constructive elements throughout the cold season, and we will do our assembling on site as soon as weather permitting.
